Funeral services for Carlos Alton Smith, Jr. of Cottonport will be held at the Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church of Plaucheville on Thursday, August 16, 2012, beginning at 10:00am. Visitations will take place at the Escud Funeral Home of Cottonport on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and will resume Thursday morning at 8:00am. Burial services will commence at the Mater Dolorosa Catholic Cemetery.
Carlos was born in Monroe, LA on March 21, 1948 to Carlos Alton Smith, Sr. of Pollock and Alice Judy Smith of Greenville, TX. He attended St. Matthews Elementary School and graduated from St. Fredericks High School in 1965. HE received both his BS 1969 and MS 1972 from Northeast Louisiana University, which is now ULM. He then received his PhD in Horticulture from LSU of Baton Rouge in 1981.
Carlos came to Avoyelles Parish in 1977 to begin teaching at LSUA. He taught there until he took the job of county agent in 1982. He worked there until his retirement in 2009. During his years as county agent, Carlos became known as an expert on anything that had to do with plants. His love of people and plants became well known throughout the state. Although he retired in 2009, he was still a regular at the county agents office answering questions and visiting with the people of the parish.
In recent years, Carlos has been very active in teaching the Master Gardener course, not only in Avoyelles and Rapides Parishes, but has been a guest lecturer throughout the state.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Carlos Alice Smith, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Robin Reid Smith his son, Timothy Smith and wife, Cindy of Cottonport his sister, Joy Smith Jones of Monroe and he is also survived by his grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and numerous friends.
