David Meechling Perkins, retired cattleman and farmer, died the 18th day of February 2010 at the age of 88 years. He married his high school sweetheart, Gloria Brisolara Perkins, who was his beloved wife of forty three years and who preceded him in death. He is the son of the late Lewis and Jeanette Meechling Perkins. Mr. Perkins Graduated from Bunkie High School and after World War II, received his B.S. in Animal Science from L.S.U. in 1948 having attended college on an athletic scholarship.
Mr. Perkins was a veteran of World War II having volunteered to serve his country from September 10, 1942 Through October 20, 1945. He served in the Infantry of the army as a 1st Sergeant. On A Day, August 15, 1944 he landed with troops in southern France. He received five Bronze stars for service in France, North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Germany.
Dave was a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner for 39 years and a lifelong member of Simmesport United Methodist Church. He had the distinction of serving as President of the Avoyelles Cattlemens Association for four separate terms and the Louisiana Cattlemens Association and was named Louisiana Cattleman of the year in 1980. He further served as President of the Louisiana and national President of the American Quarter Horse Association having been inducted into the American Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame in 1996. Mr. Perkins served as the first chairman of the Louisiana 4H Foundation which position he held for four consecutive years.
Mr. Perkins is survived by daughters, Kathryn P. Randall and Lynn P. Perez and soninlaw Craig W. Randall. He was preceded in death by soninlaw Chalin O. Perez. Survivors include his sisterinlaw Eulalie Hoover Perkins. He is also survived by his six grandchildren David and Kevin Randall and Chalyn, Kathlyn, Cherielyn and Carlyn Perez and two great Granddaughters Katie and Allie Randall.
Pallbearers will be Geary Perkins, Gerald L. Ducote, Tommy Laborde, Louis Coco Jr., Douglas Anderson, and Bryan Nuss.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Henry Moreau, Robert E. Sonny Harris, John Barry, C.O. McKerley, Calvin Hayes Jr. and Miss Kathryn Berwick.
Visitation will be from 2:00pm until 3:00pm Saturday, February 20, 2010 At Escude Funeral Home Moreauville.
Funeral Services will be held at 3:00pm Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Escude Funeral Home of Moreauville with Rev. Anthony Ranero officiating.
