On Monday, March 20th, 2023, Kathryn English McCaleb was ushered into the Kingdom of God at the age of 84 where she was reunited with her family. She died at Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Opelousas, Louisiana where she had lived for two years.
Kathryn was favorably known as Mama, Gran, Nan, Aunt Kate and Katie. She was loved by everyone who knew her, and her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of each person she interacted with as well as those she reached but never met.
Katie is survived by her children, Alisa Kathryn Davis, Charlene Lynne (Bobby) Phillips, Connie Michelle (Wayne) Verret, James Victor (Holli) McCaleb III and Michael Todd (Jennifer) McCaleb; her eight grandchildren, Shandi (Justin) Broussard, Lacie Bowman, Laura Verret, Karli McCaleb, Kayla Davis, Alex McCaleb, Layni McCaleb, and Gage McCaleb; and eight great-grandchildren Myah, Emma, Winston, Hannah, Margaret, Charlotte, Ethan, and Aliyah.
Katie was born baby 11 in Plaucheville, Louisiana on August 28th, 1938; where she was raised. She attended St. Joseph’s Convent, a graduate of 1956 and received the titles of most beautiful, best dancer and best natured. She was a winner in the 21st Annual Harold Harding Memorial Contest in 1956. She was Maid in Queens Court, Bunkie, LA for the 18th Annual Convention of National Federation of Young Men’s Clubs in 1957. After graduation she was employed with Bunkie Coca-Cola, and later with Johnson Chevrolet in Bunkie, LA. She married and moved to Texas raising four of five of their children. While in Texas much of her time was spent with her brothers & sisters and their families whom she loved greatly. They enjoyed family barbeques, gatherings at their homes, and fun at the park having their children’s birthday parties, most of the time more than one child at a time. In 1972, they returned to Louisiana and had their fifth child (the baby) where she was a stay at home mom and tended to her family’s needs. She attended many baseball games, softball games and basketball games during that time – being the biggest cheerleader for her children. Later, she became active in volunteering at St. Joseph’s Catholic School and Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church in Plaucheville, LA.
She loved her family dearly and enjoyed each moment she could spend with them. She was a great gardener; growing huge vegetables such as watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes and much, much more! Her favorite thing to do was keeping her yard immaculate and pampering her beautiful flowers. She was known for being very friendly and outgoing, never knowing a stranger. All were welcomed in her home and she sure could cook some good chicken and dumplings or pork chops with white gravy. She loved to share her coffee time with her grandchildren giving them coffee milk while sitting on the front porch. These are just some of her many qualities.
Katie was preceded in death by her parents Hiram James English and Zulma Madelyn (Mayeux) English, her sisters, Ada Ann English, Nobie English Jordan, Maria English Hubbard, Louise English Scallan, Nedra English Mayeux and her brothers, Tommy (TK) English, Harris English, Ray & Burton English (twins), and Lavern (Boo) English.
A Catholic service will be held on Friday, March 24, 2023 at Mater Dolorosa Church, in Plaucheville, Louisiana. Public visitation will begin at 11:00am, Rosary at 12:05pm and Funeral Mass at 1:00pm. Burial will be held at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery officiated by Fr. Martin Laird.
It is the wish of Katie that masses are said in lieu of flowers.
Escude Funeral Home of Mansura, 6608 Porterie St. Mansura, LA 71350 (318-964-2324) has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
