A Mass of Christian burial for Olive M. Obbie Bordelon, 95, will be held Friday, December 21, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Opelousas with the Rev. Msgr. Keith DeRouen officiating. Burial will follow in St. Marys mausoleum in Cottonport under the direction of Escud Funeral Home. Obbie passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at her home. She taught us how to have the courage to live infirmed without complaints.
Obbie was a wonderful caring person who loved people. She was born in Jeffersonville, Indiana February 4, 1917 and graduated from Jeffersonville High School. She met her husband, Stanley, while working for the federal government during World War II. They married, moved to Cottonport and lived there most of her life. She has lived in Opelousas for the past 21 years. Obbie and her husband were coowners of Service Builders Supply for over 40 years. She was a member of the Opelousas Garden Club, Elks Lodge 1048 auxiliary and the Catholic Daughters of Our Lady Queen of Angels Church.
Survivors include one child, her beloved son Greg and his wife, Marguerite one grandson, Stanley Bordelon II and his wife, Karine one granddaughter, Caroline B. Detraz and her husband Drew one stepgrandson, Hugh W. Thistlethwaite. III and her great grandchildren, Quentin Bordelon, Audreanne Bordelon, Aurella Bordelon and MacKenzie Olive Detraz.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Bordelon and her parents, Robert Lee Mitchell and Eva Rainbolt Mitchell two brothers, Randall Mitchell and Durward Mitchell.
Greg and his family thank Alberta Matthews, Lilly Myers, Effie Chambers, Elle Mae Rubin, Jenny Ledoux, and Ruth Sutton who provided care for Obbie during her last years.
A rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Melancon Funeral Home in Opelousas and will continue from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Friday.
Serving as pallbearers will be Dr. Newell Gauthier, Dr. Tom Darbonne, Gerald Moore, Larry Ducote, Hugh Gremillion and Tom Edwards. Honorary pallbearers are Raymond Beauxis, Doug Ashy, Sr., Jim Wallace.
