Funeral services for Selena Batiste will be held on Monday January 4, 2015 beginning at 11am at Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Mansura. Visitation will be held that morning beginning at 10 am until the time of service at Escude Funeral Home of Mansura. Interment will commence at St. Paul Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Escude Funeral Home.
Selena (Marie-Celina) Jean Baptiste Batiste, age 99, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at her home with family and loved ones. She was born April 2, 1916 in Mansura, La. Where she spent a portion of her childhood; Selena later moved to New Orleans where she spent the remainder of her life. She is preceded in death by her husband: John Percy Batiste, Sr.; children, John Milan Batiste, David C Batiste, Vernetta Batiste; parents: Charles Joseph Baptiste, Mariah Jacob Baptiste; siblings: Alice Jean Baptiste, Catherine Carrie Sampson, Elsie Augustine, Gertrude Jean Baptiste, Mable Bazart Augustine, Marie Eola Francisco, Marie Josephine Baptiste, Mary J Lavalais, and Preston Joseph Baptiste.
She is survived by three children: John Percy Batiste, Jr., Doreatha Ann Mosby, Glenda Marie Mitchell. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews. She was a Matriarch to 22 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren; sharing her wisdom was inevitable. Selena was a devoted Christian who attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (later St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church) where she rarely missed a service. She was also a zealous educator at heart and by profession. Selena attended Marksville High School, Peabody High School (Alexandria), and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Grambling State University in Elementary Grade Education-Special Education. She was a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, National Education Association, Grambling College Alumni Association, Louisiana Education Association, and Louisiana Principals Association. Selena retired from professionally teaching in 1978 due to medical injury with 40 years of experience; though retired "Madea" never stopped educating her family. Selena belived that a "mind was truly a powerful tool; a gift from God- but like all tools, they must be sharp, tested, and well-functioned". Memorial services will be held December 30, 2015 at 2:30 at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 1802 Tulane Ave, New Orleans, La 70112. Burial Services will be held on January 4, 2016 at 10 am at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, 1910 Escude St, Mansura, La 71350
