Mansura

Funeral service for Vernon J. Alexander of Mansura will begin at 11:00am on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at St. John Community Church-Baptist in Marksville with Rev. Charles Guillory officiating. Burial & military honors will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Cemetery in Mansura.

Vernon J. Alexander is the second child born to the union of Shedrack Floyd Alexander and Carry Beatrice (Franklin) Alexander in the village of Moreauville, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana on February 13, 1935, and entered God's Heavenly Kingdom on Thursday, January 9, 2025. He was baptized by Rev. Edward Thornton, Sr. at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and served as a Sunday School teacher as a youth.

He is a 1953 graduate of Dunbar High School and went on to graduate from Southern University with a M.S. degree in Sociology. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and had a long career as a Supervisor in the U.S. Post Office in New Orleans, Louisiana. Vernon was united in Holy Matrimony to Catherine (Rogers) Alexander in 1962 for 63 years. For most of their adult life, they were residents of New Orleans where he was a faithful member of First African Baptist Church in New Orleans.

In 1998, they moved back to Avoyelles and he joined St. John Community Church-Baptist where he was an active, faithful, and contributing member of this congregation. Vernon and “Cat” moved back to Avoyelles one year before Hurricane Katrina. They visited New Orleans shortly after the water receded and saw water marks on the top windowpane of their previous home. They thanked God for moving them out of the city before wind and water devastated New Orleans.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Catherine “Cat” Rogers Alexander; siblings, Janet Wicker, Marilyn Anderson, Apostle June (Barry) Barton, and Larry Alexander; and a host of nieces, nephews, and loving in-laws.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers: John D. Rogers, Varold Brown, SR., Christopher J. Rogers, Sr., Jessie A. Rogers, Michael Barton, Jay Wicker, Jason Alexander, and Randy Wicker; honorary pallbearers: Larry Alexander, John Barton, Sr., David King, Jr., and Calvin King, Sr.

Visitation will begin at 9:00am until 11:00am on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at St. John Community Church-Baptist in Marksville.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Escude Funeral Home (318-964-2324) 6608 Porterie St. Mansura, LA 71350.
