William "Billy" Sweeney

Memorial service for William “Billy” Sweeney of Cottonport will begin at 11:00am on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church in Cottonport with Fr. Charlie Ray officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00am on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church in Cottonport. Interment will be held on a future date. 

William “Billy” Sweeney, age 86, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025, at the Avoyelles Hospital in Marksville. Billy was a supervisor of distribution for the Times Picayune Newspaper in New Orleans for over 40 years. He was also a volunteer firefighter for Cottonport for 20 years. As a dedicated volunteer, he joyfully portrayed Santa Claus, spreading holiday cheer and creating lasting memories for children and families during the Christmas season.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 63 years, Jeanette Sweeney; daughter, Paige Sweeney; and brothers, John Sweeney, Jr. (Shirley) and Paul Sweeney (Charlene); and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, John August Sweeney and Agnes Rogers Sweeney; sister, Judith Sweeney; and brother, Phillip Sweeney.
